Taiwan achieved great results in table tennis at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The hard work of table tennis players is difficult for other people to imagine, and they spend a lot of time practicing and picking up the balls. As the multifunctional table tennis machine invented by Cheng Shiu University can serve and collect balls in one go, this machine won the gold medal in the 17th International Invention Exhibition in Ukraine. Five other inventions from the university also won gold and silver medals.

Cheng Shiu University picked up three golds and three silvers at the 17th International Invention Exhibition in Ukraine. The gold medal inventions are the multifunction table tennis machine, a diagnostic assistant system, and a 3D imaging method for topographic drawings. The inventions that won silvers are a portable vehicle for turning hospital beds, smart warehousing, and an intelligent detection and management platform for theft and burglary.

The team led by Professor Chung-hsiung Lee of the Department of Information Management, Lecturer Kun-mao Chen, and Assistant Professor Chieh-yi Lee of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management and Ching-hua Li of the Department of Information Management invented this multifunctional table tennis machine that both serves and collects balls. Professor Chung-hsiung Lee said that most table tennis machines only serve, but cannot collect or organize balls. After long hours of practicing, players need to collect a large number of balls for the next session. It is simply too demanding.

He also pointed out that sweeping robots have been around for 20-30 years, but there was no ball collecting robot. After a lot of thinking and exploration, he invented a multifunctional table tennis machine that can serve and collect balls at the same time. Players can practice by having the machine do the serving and reuse the balls by having the machine do the collecting.

The innovative and gold-medal winning multifunctional table tennis machine consists of three modules: the automatic collector, the conveyor belt, and the automatic server. The automatic collector looks for balls around the hard table and picks up the balls identified, the conveyor belt transports the collected balls vertically into the bin, while the automatic server transports balls via the conveyor belt to the top and serves balls with the friction and turning of a brushless motor running at a high speed.

According to Professor Chung-hsiung Lee, this multifunctional table tennis machine still requires the user to remotely control the collection function. Hopefully, artificial intelligence and visual recognition can be introduced so that it can automatically pick up balls in the future.
