The Taiwan International Student Design Competition, as organized by the Ministry of Education, is the world's largest design competition for students. In the 2021 competition, “Celestial Tower of Cheery-Blossom Birthday Cakes”, as designed by students Kuo-jung Wu, Li-wei Chen, and Chia-liang Hung under the instruction of Lecturers Yu-sheng Huang and Yueh-hsing Lai of Department of Visual Communication Design, Cheng Shiu University, won the special award and a bonus of NT$100,000 from MDA (Macau Design Award).

The Taiwan International Student Design Competition is a global design contest with a history of 14 years. The entries in 2021 totaled 21,901, from 59 countries and 970 faculties.

The Taiwan International Student Design Competition recently issued awards for 2021 in Taipei. The Department of Visual Communication Design, Cheng Shiu University, stood out from a crowd of numerous contestants and received the special award and NT$100,000 from Macau Design Award (MDA).

The Department of Visual Communication Design, Cheng Shiu University, observed religious rituals and celebrations, and found that celestial towers of cherry blossom birthday cakes are frequently seen, but are disposed of after one use. The environmental- friendly design of mortise and tenon joints makes it possible to use the towers multiple times, as well as easier to put together and dismantle for storage.  The traditional decorative patterns are transformed with contemporary minimalism, in order that the celestial towers for the birthdays of gods look chic and modern.

President Jui-Chang Kung from Cheng Shiu University indicated that the Taiwan International Student Design Competition attracted a total of 21,901 entries, from 59 countries and 970 faculties. Given the winning rate of a mere 0.3%, it was not easy for students to win awards. The celestial towers design not only won this competition but also took the Red Dot Award this year, a bronze medal in the Youth Innovative Design Festival, a special award in the Young Pin Design Award, and the Golden Pin Concept Design Award.

Shou-che Wu, Dean of the Office of Arts and Culture and Chair of the Department of Visual Communication Design of Cheng Shiu University, mentioned that for years the Department of Visual Communication Design has been dedicated to the education of design capabilities and the enhancement of teaching quality. The department has set up a special room for participants in international competitions. The university is supported by the Higher Education Deep Cultivation Program and invests resources in systematically preparing teachers and students for international design contests. These efforts have paid off with repeated awards from the Red Dot Award, Moscow Global Biennale of Graphic Design Golden Bee Award, Biennale of Global Graphic Design, Asia Student Package Design Competition (ASPaC), International Poster Triennial in Toyama, the 4th Block International Poster Award in Ukraine, and Adobe Design Achievement Awards (ADAA).
